Course Requirements for second semester:
1. One in class test on Feb. 28th on material covered up to reading week break (25%).
2. One term paper due on April 12th (25%). Topics will be given out approximately one month before the paper is due. The paper should be 8-10 pages double spaced.
The course readings will cover material from Berkeley, Hume and Kant and will follow (roughly) the following schedule:
Jan. 10-24th - Introductory lecture on the Empiricists and Kant; Berkeley’s Three Dialogues between Hylas and Philonous (Cahn, pp. 686-731)
Jan. 31st- Feb. 14th – Hume’s Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding (pp.734-802).
Feb. 21st – Reading Week.
Feb. 28th – Test on Berkeley and Hume.
March 7th – April 4th – Selections from Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason (pp. 878-953)
April 11th – Summary lecture and review. PAPER DUE.
LATE PAPERS WILL BE DEDUCTED TWO GRADES PER DAY UNLESS THERE IS A WRITTEN MEDICAL EXCUSE (I.E. 25 TO 23 FOR ONE DAY LATE).
A MEDICAL NOTE MUST ALSO BE PRESENTED IF A TEST IS MISSED. GRADING POLICY FOR MISSED TESTS WILL BE ANNOUNCED AT A LATER DATE.
